Dear College Panhellenic officers, fraternity/sorority advisors and vice presidents of student affairs,

Earlier this year, in an effort to take proper precautions against the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) guided College Panhellenic Associations with scheduled fall term recruitments through the development of recruitment contingency plans. This included the appointment of Recruitment Response Teams to coach College Panhellenic officers in gathering situational facts for their campuses and making the best decisions for their communities about the type and style (fully structured, partially structured or continuous) of recruitment to be held. In so doing, many communities reexamined their recruitment style and developed contingencies for hybrid or fully virtual recruitments instead of in-person recruitments.

Recently, as students began to return to campuses across the country and campus-based COVID-19 hotspots began to emerge, NPC shifted our procedural guidance to campuses to transition to a fully virtual recruitment experience. We are now extending this guidance to all fall and spring recruiting campuses. Panhellenic recruitment hosted through the remainder of the 2020-21 academic year should be hosted as a fully virtual experience (recruitment events through electronic bid distribution).

With this shift in guidance, moving forward, spring or deferred recruiting campuses will not be assigned a Recruitment Response Team. Instead, we ask that you work with your NPC College Panhellenic area advisor to develop contingency plans, starting with plan A, a fully virtual recruitment. You may also think about plan B as a hybrid and plan C as in-person. This also serves as a great opportunity for your community to revisit the primary recruitment styles (fully structured, partially structured or continuous; defined in the NPC Manual of Information) and reexamine this style, looking ahead to the needs of your community.

If you have any questions along the way, please do not hesitate to reach out to your area advisor, area advisor coordinator or Panhellenic support staff member at the NPC office. We look forward to sharing what we learn about various recruitment contingencies this fall to help inform spring recruitment decision-making and practices.

Panhellenically,

Carole J. Jones
